Walkie-Talkie App for Kids: Family Push-to-Talk Without Phone Numbers

In short: Push-to-talk is great for quick family check-ins: dinner calls across a big house, a kid at the neighbor's, a split-up trip to the store. You can use license-free FRS radios, or a walkie-talkie app on iPhones and iPads you already own (Apple Watch's built-in Walkie-Talkie was discontinued with watchOS 27). Before a child uses any app, check who can reach them, what's collected, whether voice is stored and what it costs.

Kids don't always have their own phone number, and even when they do, a phone call is overkill for "dinner's ready" or "time to come home". A walkie-talkie is simpler: hold a button, talk, let go. This guide covers when push-to-talk works better than calling or texting, the main options for families, and a short safety and privacy checklist. We make one of these apps, Buddy Duo Walkie-Talkie for iPhone and iPad, and we'll be clear about what it does and doesn't do.

When push-to-talk beats calling or texting

  • Big house, many floors. Yelling up the stairs doesn't work, and calling someone in the next room feels silly.
  • Kids playing next door or in the yard. A quick "five more minutes" check-in without a full phone call.
  • Young kids who can't text yet. One big button is easier than typing or dialing.
  • No phone number on the child's device. A hand-me-down phone or a Wi-Fi iPad can still be a walkie-talkie.
  • Short, frequent messages. Push-to-talk suits "where are you?" more than a long conversation.

It's not a replacement for a phone in an emergency. A walkie-talkie app can't call 911, and a radio only reaches as far as its range.

Your options

OptionWhat you needGood to know
FRS walkie-talkiesA pair of FCC-certified FRS radiosNo license and no internet. Range is limited, and channels are shared, so strangers nearby can hear you.
Apple Watch Walkie-TalkieApple Watch for each person, FaceTime set up on iPhoneDiscontinued with watchOS 27, per Apple.
Walkie-talkie appsA phone or tablet with Wi-Fi or cellular dataNo range limit beyond the internet itself. Privacy and cost vary a lot by app.

FRS radios: no license needed

The FCC says the Family Radio Service is "licensed by rule": you can operate an FRS radio without an individual license, regardless of your age, as long as it's FCC-certified and not modified. There are 22 FRS channels, all shared with the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), which does require a license, so you may hear other people. The FCC notes the usual range on channels 8 to 14 is under half a mile, with longer range possible on channels 1 to 7 and 15 to 22 depending on conditions. Radios are cheap and need no accounts, but anyone on the same channel nearby can listen.

Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie: discontinued

Apple's support page says Walkie-Talkie was discontinued with watchOS 27. After the update the app disappears from the watch and can't be downloaded, and watches still on watchOS 26 or earlier can't start a conversation with a friend who has updated. If your family relied on it, you'll need another option.

Walkie-talkie apps

Apps turn phones and tablets into walkie-talkies over Wi-Fi or cellular data. Range is no longer a problem, but you're trusting the app with your family's voices, so the checklist below matters more here.

Safety and privacy checklist for kids' apps

In the US, the FTC enforces the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). In short, it applies to websites and online services, including apps, that are directed to children under 13 or that know they're collecting personal information from kids under 13, and it generally requires notice to parents and verifiable parental consent before collecting that information. Whatever the app, ask these questions:

  1. Who can contact my child? Prefer a closed group you control (a private room or invite) over a public chat or "talk to strangers" feature.
  2. Does it need an account, email or phone number? Less sign-up usually means less personal data collected.
  3. Is voice recorded or stored? Read the privacy policy, not just the marketing.
  4. What permissions does it ask for? A walkie-talkie needs the microphone. It shouldn't need location, contacts or photos.
  5. Ads and purchases. Check for ads and how in-app purchases work, and turn on your device's parental controls.
  6. What does the App Store privacy label say? Compare it with the privacy policy.

One habit that helps with any app: have kids use a first name or nickname as their display name, not their full name.

How Buddy Duo handles this

Buddy Duo was built for exactly this family use. Here's what its App Store listing, support page and privacy policy say:

  • No account, no sign-up, no ads. Family members join with a private room code and a display name.
  • Voice is never stored. Audio goes directly between devices (peer-to-peer via WebRTC) and is never sent to, recorded by or stored on Xaplore's servers. When two devices can't connect directly, audio goes through a TURN relay but stays end-to-end encrypted, so the relay operator can't read it.
  • Microphone only while you hold the button. It doesn't use the camera, contacts, photos or location.
  • Short-lived connection data. To help devices find each other, a signaling server sees the room code, display name, a random device ID, connection handshake data, your IP address and a push token. Presence expires after 15 seconds of inactivity, handshake messages after 60 seconds and push tokens after 30 days of inactivity. The App Store privacy label lists identifiers (user ID and device ID) as "not linked to you".
  • Price. Free to download with in-app purchases. Buddy Duo Premium is a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription with a 3-day free trial, and one subscription can cover the family through Family Sharing. As of October 2026 the US App Store lists it at $1.99 a month or $8.99 a year.

It requires iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, and the app is in English.

Setting up family push-to-talk with Buddy Duo

  1. Install Buddy Duo Walkie-Talkie on each iPhone or iPad. On the Home Screen it shows up as Walkie Talkie.
  2. One person creates a room and gets a private, unguessable code, then shares it with the family by Messages, AirDrop or however you like.
  3. Everyone opens the app, enters the same room code and their own name, and joins.
  4. Allow microphone access when asked.
  5. Hold the big button to talk; release it to listen.

You don't need to keep the app open: when someone tries to reach you, the app is woken in the background and shows an incoming call. If you can't hear each other, check that you're in the same room, the volume is up and the app has microphone permission (Settings → Walkie Talkie → Microphone). On different networks, give the connection a few seconds to set up.

FAQ

Does my child need a phone number to use a walkie-talkie app?

Not with every app. Some push-to-talk apps work on any iPhone or iPad with an internet connection, including a Wi-Fi-only iPad. Buddy Duo, for example, has no account or sign-up: family members join the same private room code and type a display name.

Do I need a license for kids' walkie-talkies?

Not for Family Radio Service (FRS) radios. The FCC says FRS is licensed by rule, so you can use an FCC-certified, unmodified FRS radio without an individual license, regardless of age. The channels are shared with GMRS, and GMRS radios do need a license.

Can my kids use Walkie-Talkie on Apple Watch?

Apple says Walkie-Talkie was discontinued with watchOS 27. After updating, the app no longer appears on the watch, and watches still on watchOS 26 or earlier can't start a conversation with a friend who has updated. Before that, it required both people to have an Apple Watch and FaceTime set up on iPhone.

Does Buddy Duo record conversations?

No. According to Xaplore's privacy policy, voice goes directly between devices and is never sent to, recorded by or stored on its servers. If a direct connection fails, audio passes through a TURN relay but stays end-to-end encrypted by WebRTC. The microphone is used only while you hold the talk button.

Is Buddy Duo free?

It is a free download with in-app purchases. Buddy Duo Premium is a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription with a 3-day free trial, and one subscription can cover the family through Family Sharing. Check the App Store listing for current prices in your region.
