Full dialogue

Every line as it appears in the subtitles, with who says it and an English translation. Stage directions in italics describe what happens on screen.

  1. Dawei sits on a low stool next to the open suitcase, beaming with pride. His mom leans over to look.
Why is it all vitamins?
  3. Seen from above: the suitcase is packed to the rim. Dawei taps a list tucked into the lid: 二姨:鱼油×3 / 三舅:钙片×2 / 小姑:维C×4 / 隔壁王阿姨:叶黄素×2 (Second Aunt: fish oil ×3; Third Uncle: calcium ×2; Youngest Aunt: vitamin C ×4; Auntie Wang next door: lutein ×2).
  4. 王大伟 Dawei大家点名要的。Everyone put in a request.
Remind me, what is it you do in America again?
…I'm a programmer.
I thought you worked at a pill factory.
  8. Dawei freezes, then scratches the back of his head. Mom calmly looks back down at the suitcase and gives a tiny shake of her head.

The joke

The setup is the request list in the lid. Every relative has ordered something, and the son who flies home is the delivery service. Dawei is proud of how neatly he packed it. His mom looks at a suitcase that holds nothing but supplements and reaches the obvious conclusion: anyone who comes home with this much stock must work in the business.

The beat before the punchline matters. Dawei pauses before he says “programmer,” as if he isn't sure that answer will make sense to her either. Her reply is delivered flat, with no anger at all, which is what makes it land. It also fits a running thread of the series: Dawei's family has never quite understood what he does for a living.

Before you pack for a trip to China

This page does not try to summarize customs rules for medicines or supplements; they are set by China's customs authority and can change, so check the official guidance before you fly. What we can help with is the paperwork: our free China Travel Docs Checklist covers passport renewal, travel documents for US-born kids, China visas and visa-free transit, with the official links for each. If you are a US citizen, the China visa guide walks through the form, documents and fee. And if the trip goes the other way and your parents are coming to visit you, start with the B-2 visa guide for parents.

How this episode was made

3D animation in 16:9 widescreen (1920×1080), about 18 seconds long. There is one set, the parents' living room, taken from the series' scene library, and one main camera position: the close-ups are cropped from that one wide shot, so the room never changes between cuts. The bottle labels and the handwritten list were drawn onto the shots afterwards, in plain type with no brand names. Both characters are AI voices; Mom speaks with a Shaanxi accent. The little kazoo tune as Dawei shows off his packing, like all the sound effects, was synthesized in-house rather than taken from a library. The episode went up on Douyin on the evening of October 5, 2026 (US Eastern time) and on Xiaohongshu the next morning, Beijing time, labeled as AI-generated.
